What attractions are there along I-76 in Colorado?
Also, how about attractions along Hwy 470 S in Colorado?
A-Best: Both are really in the middle of nothing....I take you are coming down from Nebraska on I-76. It is fairly barren along that route. You'll hit E470 before you really even get into Denver - the point is that it's a toll way to get you around Denver.
You'll have a beautiful view of the mountains though!
A: The thing I remember most about I-76 is the sugar beet processing plant near Fort Morgan.
There's not much else out there that is even worth noticing, its a boring drive. I think its kind of pretty landscape but most people don't. There are no actual 'attractions' as far as I know.
That beet factory smells pretty bad though so you'll definitely notice it.
A: Don't listen to those who say there's nothing along I-76. It's one of my favorite places to travel on the plains, because every little attraction you find is uncrowded and it feels like a real discovery.
Starting from Nebraska:
Visit the Colorado Welcome Center in Julesburg. The Welcome Center has tons of suggestions along the way, and there are various small exhibits inside the welcome center itself. Julesburg was part of the Overland Trails (Oregon Trail and so on) briefly.
Also in Julesburg, the Fort Sedgwick Depot Museum retraces the history of the Oregon Trails.
Continuing along I-76, the city of Sterling has the Overland Trail Museum that continues the Oregon Trail theme. Sterling is also known as the "City of Living Trees" - 17 of the town's trees have been carved into sculptures.
After Sterling you'll hit Fort Morgan. The Fort Morgan Museum traces development from Native Americans to modern farmers. Fort Morgan used to be home to Glenn Miller, and Philip K. Dick is buried in one of the town's cemeteries. At some point after Fort Morgan you pass Lochbuie (my hometown! It's tiny), and to the left you'll soon see Barr Lake, a good recreation area. After Barr Lake you'll hit Denver.
