Where to return I-94 when you are returning to Canada from US?
My wife a legal permanent resident of Canada is driving to US, she has a visitor visa. Where should she hand over the I-94 card on her way back to Canada. She's driving.
A-Best: If she was flying, the answer would be simple - at the LAST airport she was in before landing in Canada. She would have had to turn it in at the airline ticket counter (NOT the smaller desk at the actual gate).
Since she's driving, she has two choices.
- - She can stop just before reaching the border and turn it in to the USCIS folks on the US side of the border (at the border checkpoint).
- - She can stop just after crossing the border and turn it in to the CIC folks on the Canadian side of the border (at the border checkpoint) - who will then return it to the US side, probably at the end of the business day. If turning in to the Canadian side, she should retain a copy of the I-94, complete with the information of who she gave it to, when, and where. This will help her if she ever wants to return to the US but there's no record of having turned in the original I-94 on her way out.
She may have to exit her vehicle though, depending on the border crossing point she uses.
